- "Extreme Guitar Shred" DVD Review in Prog Rock Place

- This is a review on a really wild (and I mean REALLY wild) guitar player I just recently came across called "The Great
Kat" (http://www.greatkat.com/) while surfing some guitar sites, where they mentioned
she was one of the "Top 10 fastest shredders of all time". I just checked out a
copy of her "Extreme Guitar Shred" DVD and it's definitely not for the faint of
heart :)

- She (Katherine Thomas) really is a virtuoso, both on guitar and violin (she is a honors
graduate of Juilliard in violin). She combines speed metal and classical to give a really
interesting mix of genres and her technical prowess puts to shame a lot of would-be guitar
heroes.

- As for the visuals, Kat goes for the patriotism, fetishism, and the horror movie shocker
aspects, and in the videos, she can be pretty extreme at times (you should check out
Castration, which is censored, and Dominatrix, for which I really liked the music). Her
vocals are, in her own words, "scream/grunt/yell" - which goes well with the
style. Amongst others, she has recorded hyperspeed versions of Vivaldi and Paganini pieces
- she told me in an email that she will be doing "a NEW Paganini's 24th Caprice
soon".

- When you see all of this, you may think she is completely crazy but I think she is a
shrewd marketer as well as an excellent player. And all in all, you'll enjoy the theatrics
and blood and guts if you're into it, but do really listen to her playing, you will hear
some pretty fast licks indeed.
