Interview with Great Kat
By: Terry Bunch
Date: July, 2009
1. For the readers who may not be familiar with your musical past,
what was your primary reason for switching from classical violin to
metal guitar?
Great Kat: CLASSICAL MUSIC IS DEAD! The Great Kat is a Juilliard
Graduate Violin Virtuoso, Full Scholarship Student at Juilliard
School, the Concertmaster of the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra,
winner of the "Robert Hufstader Scholarship" in Theory at Juilliard,
winner of the exclusive "Artists International Competition" and
violin soloist at Carnegie Recital Hall.
After graduating from Juilliard and realizing that Classical Music
had died, I listened to all forms of popular music to find the style
of music that fits best with Classical, so I could update this
genius music. I FOUND HEAVY METAL and THE GREAT KAT'S
SHRED/CLASSICAL MUSIC WAS BORN!!!!!!!!
The Great Kat is NOW the "Top 10 Fastest Shredders Of All Time"
(Guitar One Magazine) and "50 Fastest Guitarists Of All Time"
(Guitar World Magazine)
Now go and check out The Great Kat's GENIUS NEW "BEETHOVEN'S GUITAR
SHRED" DVD!!!
2. Your DVDs portray you as a dominatrix with a literal splash of
horror gore. Is there another side to the Great Kat that we have not
seen yet?
GK: THE GREAT KAT IS AN ECCENTRIC, EGOMANIACAL GUITAR SHREDDING
GENIUS, CLASSICAL VIOLIN VIRTUOSO, VICIOUS, RAW, BLOOD-DRIPPING
METAL DOMINATRIX AND a CUTE, LOVABLE, RIBBON and LINGERIE WEARING
GODDESS!!!!
NOW BEND OVER, FAGGOTS, and let me SHOVE MY SPIKED HEEL UP YOUR
FLACCID BUTTS!!!!!!!!!!!
3. What are thoughts on the idea of forming a band and writing full
length material incorporating your classical training? We would love
to see you on tour.
GK: The Great Kat is right now getting ready to play live on TV
shows and select tour dates with my band. The Great Kat Shred Show
will be an INSANE, FAST-PACED, OUTRAGEOUS Show with tons of GUITAR
SHREDDING, METAL MADNESS and WHIPPING, TORTURE AND ABUSE!!!!!!!!!!
Stay tuned to the Kat web site at http://www.greatkat.com/ for
details.
4. You have mentioned in previous interviews that you are not
influenced by other metal bands. What inspires you to create the
music that you do?
GK: The Great Kat's Influences: BEETHOVEN, Ozzy, Judas Priest,
Hendrix!!!!!
5. How do you choose which classical pieces you are going to
"shred"? Do you choose the piece based on complexity or is it more
of a personal preference?
GK: There are several criteria to meet when The Great Kat chooses a
Classical work to Shred:
1-Choose a popular Classical work
2-Must be exciting, Powerful and Virtuoso
6. One of the goals of our magazine is to showcase that metal is a
lifestyle, full of personal preference, artistic diversity and
cultural influences. Deep down inside, what does the power of the
metal guitar do for your soul?
GK: THE GREAT KAT IS THE NEW BEETHOVEN and is blessing the masses by
bringing CLASSICAL MUSIC TO THE WORLD USING SHRED METAL GUITAR!!!!!!
7. We have followed you since your "Digital Beethoven on Cyberspeed"
release, back when women in metal were not taken too seriously. What
are your thoughts on the current acceptance of female metal bands
and females in metal?
GK: Women have to be VIRTUOSOS to be taken seriously and compete
with men!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S WHY THE GREAT KAT PLAYS FASTER, MORE
BRILLIANTLY and MORE VIRTUOSICALLY than MEN to EARN ATTENTION and
RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!
8. Any other thoughts or comments you would like to share?
