- En mayo del pasado año, Katherine Thomas: The Great Kat, se contactó al mail de LRDRP a raíz del post Mis 10+: Discos imprescindibles del thrash metal, en el cual su álbum de 1990: Beethoven On Speed ocupó el 4° puesto, junto a grandes clásicos de Metallica, Megadeth, Metal Church, Anthrax y Slayer, entre otros. Desde aquel contacto surgió la idea de extenderle a Kat una entrevista, idea que fue aplazada durante meses, concretándose ahora que el blog pasa por su momento más fecundo en esta materia

- Tus incios en la música, fueron en el violín, ¿A qué edad comenzaste a tocar la guitarra?, ¿Qué otros instrumentos tocas?

In May last year, Katherine Thomas, The Great Kat, contacted LRDRP following the post My 10 +: essential albums of thrash metal, in which her 1990 album: Beethoven On Speed occupied the 4th place, along with classics from Metallica, Megadeth, Metal Church, Anthrax and Slayer, among others. From that contact came the idea of extending an interview to Kat, an idea that was delayed for months, taking shape now that the blog is getting very popular.
Your beginnings in music were on the violin, at what age you start to play guitar?, what other instruments do you play?

- Después de graduarme de Julliard, como una virtuosa del violín, me dí cuenta de que la música clásica estaba muerta y decidí actualizarme para llegar a las masas. Después de escuchar algunos géneros de la música popular, descubrí el speed metal y cogí la guitarra eléctrica. Simplemente tome mí técnica de violín de estílo Paganini (una técnica especial con la mano izquierda que aprendí en Julliard) y la adapté a la guitarra. Comencé luego a transcribir de manera exacta partituras para guitarra, banda, violín y orquesta, convirtiéndome en Great Kat: Suma sacerdotisa de la guitarra shred!!

¿Qué guitarristas consideras tus mayores influencias?

Sólo a PAGANINI, que ha sido el único guitarrista y virtuoso del violín, además de The Great Kat.

AFTER graduating from The Juilliard School as a violin virtuoso I realized that Classical Music was DEAD and needed to be UPDATED for the MASSES!!!! After listening to popular music forms, I discovered speed metal and picked up the electric guitar. I simply took my PAGANINI-STYLE violin technique (a special left-hand technique I learned at Juilliard) and transposed it to the guitar. Then I began transcribing EXACT Classical Music scores for the guitar, band, violin and orchestra and I BECAME THE GREAT KAT--THE HIGH PRIESTESS OF GUITAR SHRED!!!!

- ¿Cómo surgió la idea de fusionar tus influencias clásicas (Beethoven, Rossini, Wagner...) con el speed metal?.
La idea de mezclar ambos géneros, comenzó porque fue la única manera de actualizar la música clásica y llevarla directo a las idiotas masas, a través del metal!

How started the idea of mixing classical influences (Beethoven, Rossini, Wagner ...) with the speed metal?
The idea of mixing Classical and Speed Metal started because the ONLY way to UPDATE CLASSICAL music and bring it DIRECTLY to the MORON MASSES is THROUGH METAL!!
What do you think about the current metal scene?
