- The Great Kat: Guitar Heroine, Speed Metal Queen, Juilliard graduate, and one of the world’s fastest guitarists. Besides her insanely quick playing, her trademark is that she loves to play classic pieces on her guitar.
She’s also quite terrifying.
I became acquainted with the Great Kat after I demanded that she be included in Rock Band 3. Some people told me I was mad for proposing this. To those people I say that you’d better pray she doesn’t find out where you live. The Great Kat graciously consented to an email interview. Now that she’s answered some of my questions, I am even more afraid of her. Seriously, what did I get myself into this time?

- Q: Your specialty is “shreds” of classical music. Which of your shreds is your favourite? Any pieces of classical music you haven’t done that you’d like to?

Q: When did you realize this was your calling? Who inspired you, musically? Who in your family inspired you, or gives you a lot of support? Any other musicians in the family?
The Great Kat: After listening to Beethoven since birth, I realized that my mission was to become a composer, musical revolutionary and the NEW BEETHOVEN!!! The Great Kat Shred Guitar Goddess is here to SYSTEMATICALLY RESURRECT CLASSICAL music for the MASSES and bring GENIUS COMPLEX Classical music to EVERY SINGLE PERSON!!!!!
Q: Being a Juilliard alumnus, what do they think of your act? Do you ever go back to Juilliard to speak, or are they afraid of you?
The Great Kat: WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE GREAT KAT IS GOD/THE METAL MESSIAH/THE REINCARNATION OF BEETHOVEN AND THE GODDESS OF ALL SHRED GUITAR!!!! Do you think PAGANINI, MOZART, BEETHOVEN, WAGNER and other REVOLUTIONARIES would have given a CRAP what people thought about their “ACT”?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!
Q: When shredding, what brand of guitar do you use? Do you have a favourite? Is it customized?
The Great Kat: The Great Kat SHREDS on a variety of guitars. My favorite guitars are LIGHTWEIGHT and have a FAST, SMOOTH ACTION on the fretboard and neck. Check out The Great Kat’s SHRED GUITAR VIRTUOSITY on “The Flight Of The Bumble-Bee!”
Q: What other instruments can you play? Might any make an appearance in any of your upcoming work?
The Great Kat: The Great Kat is a highly-trained VIOLIN VIRTUOSO and GUITAR VIRTUOSO, with YEARS of INTENSE TECHNICAL TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: Metal, and even rock and roll, just doesn’t seem to be the force in pop music it once was. What do you think has changed? Can it come back?
The Great Kat: THE INTERNET IS HERE AND FORCING THE WORLD TO SPEED UP, MOVE FAST, AND MULTITASK IN REAL TIME!!!! THAT’S SPECIFICALLY WHY THE GREAT KAT’S ENERGIZING and GENIUSIZING STYLE OF MUSIC is PERFECT for the FAST-MOVING, FAST-THINKING INTERNET GENERATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: What’s your take on today’s music? Are there any acts you like, any trends you support? Any you despise?

Q: How has the rise of digital music distribution changed what you do? Has it been a help, or a hindrance?
The Great Kat: DIGITAL MUSIC DISTRIBUTION has DEFINITELY HELPED SPREAD The Great Kat’s SEARING and BLISTERING Guitar Virtuosity to the entire world!!!
Q: When not shredding, what are you up to? Any non-musical hobbies?
The Great Kat: SPREADING THE GOSPEL of THE GREAT KAT QUEEN OF SPEED TO THE UNEDUCATED MASSES!!!!!!!!! NOW GET OUT OF MY WAY and LET ME GET TO WORK, PEONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: What would be an ideal romantic date for you?
Evidently, this would be Kat's ideal romantic date.
- The Great Kat: An “ideal romantic date” would be chaining up one of my Kat Slaves and whipping, abusing, insulting, threatening, harassing, and inflicting pain and torture on this dedicated Kat-Possessed Slave, who will no doubt end the “date” by LICKING my SPICKED heel and PROCLAIMING “THE GREAT KAT IS GOD” while bowing 4 TIMES BEFORE THE GODDESS OF METAL—THE GREAT KAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will you be applying for the position, Jason??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: How do you think they should handle the enormous BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?
The Great Kat: I SUGGEST THEY IMMEDIATELY GO AND LISTEN TO the COMPLEX and POWERFUL MUSIC OF BEETHOVEN, MOZART, BACH, and THE GREAT KAT to GENIUSIZE THEMSELVES and become MORE INTELLIGENT!!!!! QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: What’s up next for The Great Kat?
The Great Kat: On the NEXT Shred/Classical DVD, The Great Kat will be SHREDDING one of THE MOST TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT AND DEMANDING VIOLIN VIRTUOSO PIECES ever written: NICCOLO PAGANINI’S “MOTO PERPETUO” on the GUITAR and VIOLIN, along with works of BEETHOVEN, MOZART and MORE!!!!!!
