- The Great Kat rises again as Beethoven gets the guitar shred treatment on DVD
Chris Jenkins - 6 July 2010 - 4:17pm
- If you like heavy metal, distorted guitars and wild ladies in bondage gear, we have just about the perfect DVD for you - The Great Kat's Beethoven's Guitar Shred.
The Great Kat - known to her friends as Katherine Thomas - has been voted one of the 12 greatest female electric guitarists, and one of the 50 fastest guitarists of all time. Kat's 'shredding' style is based on her classical violin education, now put to use mangling the greats of classical music into a nerve-jarring aural assault of finger-blisteringly fast electric noise.
Having already tackled Wagner, Rimsky-Korsakov and Paganini, Kat turns her attention to good old Ludvig Van in her latest DVD, available on Amazon, iTunes or for $9.95 direct from her website at www.greatkat.com .
Blood and fire
The DVD features performances of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, as well as Flight of the Bumble-Bee, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no.3, and Paganini's Caprice No. 24. But be warned - Kat's performance also features buckets of blood and gore, gratuitous torture scenes and assorted heavy metal mayhem. The DVD also features a gallery of Kat's grand guignol torture techniques, stills, and some crazy Kat cartoons, so it's probably not the sort of thing you'd want to leave lying around when Granny was visiting.
Pretty much a home-made effort, the DVD hardly breaks any technical barriers, with its short running-time, 4:3 picture and Dolby stereo sound. But it is something you'll want to watch over and over again, as much for Kat's scantily-clad, blood-spattered dominatrix stage persona as for her blistering performances. Kat (born on a USAF base in Swindon, fact fans) is certainly a distinctive performer, not the sort of thing you'd expect to see on The X Factor.
Check out the DVD, puny mortals, but don't say we didn't warn you...
