A Section of the Interview in English
- In the matter of virtuosity, the speed metal guitarist, The Great Kat, leaves you
stunned. Katherine Thomas is English, but grew up in the United States, where she studied
Classical Music at the famous Juilliard School, in New York. The virtuoso violinist
gained popularity when she started bringing to the guitar the classics from Classical
Music that she played on the violin. Leather clothes, flames, flares and fake blood are
some of the items that make up the figure of The Great Kat. Despite the extravagance, the
guitarist makes an impression with her dominance of speed techniques. Next, the Queen of
Shred tells us her secrets of her ability.
- How did you start to study guitar?
- I was a scholarship student at the Juilliard School and performed my solo Carnegie
Recital Hall as a Classical Violin Soloist after winning the Artists International
Competition. I then realized that Classical Music was dead and immediately needed to be
revived. I looked to all forms of popular music and found speed metal. I learned the
guitar and began transcribing violin techniques and solos to the guitar, like Beethoven's
Violin Concerto, Paganini's 24 Caprices, Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen. I developed a fast,
furious and virtuoso style.
