- WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE BIOGRAPHY
- WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, the GREATEST PLAYWRIGHT
and DRAMATIST in History, wrote such GENIUS masterpieces as "HAMLET",
"ROMEO AND JULIET" and "MACBETH"!
-
-
William Shakespeare was born
on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare
is the greatest playwright and dramatist in history . He was
born in a highly creative Renaissance period in England, shortly
after
Queen
Elizabeth I became
the Queen of England. No records exists about
Shakespeare's education, but he most likely studied at the
grammar school in Stratford at "King's New
School".
His father was the mayor
of Stratford and his father's job included providing
entertainment for the town. Shakespeare most likely saw
traveling actors performing in his town, while they were on
tour.
-
- In 1594, Shakespeare began
his career as an actor and playwright for "Lord Chamberlain's
Men" theater company in London. He wrote around 42 plays. Some
of his earliest famous plays include "The
Taming Of The Shrew"
(early 1590's), "Romeo and Juliet"
(1594), "Merchant Of Venice"
(1596), followed by "A Midsummer Night's Dream".
In 1599, Shakespeare became a partner owner at London's famous
"Globe Theater".
His heavily dramatic tragedies were written starting in 1600
with "Hamlet"
(1600),
"Othello" (1604),
"King Lear"
(1605), "Macbeth"
(1605), "Antony and Cleopatra".
Shakespeare's "Hamlet"
explores revenge, betrayal and
morality. "Othello"
and "Macbeth"
are displays of good vs. evil.
The "Merry Wives of Windsor"
was actually written from a
request by
Queen
Elizabeth I.
Shakespeare's plays are written in a rhythmic iambic pentameter
verse, with complex characters.
Shakespeare's works are known for their complex
characters and famous quotable lines:
- "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women
merely players" - from "As You Like It"
"To be, or not to be, that is the question" - from "Hamlet"
"Off with his head!"- from "Richard III"
-
- "Pound of flesh" - from "Merchant Of Venice"
-
In 1616, at the age of 52, Shakespeare returned to live in
Stratford-upon-Avon. Allegedly, Shakespeare contracted a fever
after a rowdy night out with a friend. Shakespeare died on the
same day he was born, April 23, in 1616. Shakespeare was buried
in Holy Trinity Church.
The epitaph on his tombstone reads:
-
"Good frend for Iesvs sake forbeare,
To digg the dvst encloased heare.
Bleste be ye man yt spares thes stones,
And cvrst be he yt moves my bones"
- (Good friend, for Jesus sake forbear,
To dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares
these stones, And cursed be he that moves my bones.)
