Mythology:
 
In Norse Mythology, The VALKYRIES were immortal WOMEN WARRIORS and the "CHOOSERS OF THE SLAIN" soldiers in battle. They carried the dead soldiers to Valhalla, the great Hall of the Dead.
 
"Die Walkure" (The Valkyrie) OPERA:
In Richard Wagner's opera "Die Walkure" (from the Cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen"-"The Ring of the Nibelung"), the VALKYRIES are WOMEN WARRIORS and HEROIC FIGURES banding together in a POWERFUL SISTERHOOD retrieving the dead heroes slain in battle and carrying them to VALHALLA!
 
In Richard Wagner's opera "Die Walkure" (from the Cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen"-"The Ring of the Nibelung"), the VALKYRIES are WOMEN WARRIORS and HEROIC FIGURES banding together in a POWERFUL SISTERHOOD retrieving the dead heroes slain in battle and carrying them to VALHALLA!
BRUNNHILDE is the LEADER of the VALKYRIES and the MAIN FIGURE of the Opera.    Brunnhilde's father, WOTAN tells Brunnhilde to assemble the Valkyries to help the hero, Siegmund, in his battle with Hunding. Wotan changes his mind and withdraws his protection over Siegmund, because Wotan's wife, Fricka, was furious that Siegmund was having an incestuous affair with his SISTER and TWIN, Sieglinde. Wotan instructs Brunnhilde to now ensure that Siegmund DIES in battle. Brunnhilde appears to Siegmund (only soldiers who are going to die can look at Brunnhilde) and tells Siegmund she has come to take him to Valhalla. Siegmund refuses to leave Sieglinde and demands to go into battle with Hunding. Brunnhilde is sympathetic to Siegmund and promises to help, despite Wotan's wishes. Siegmund goes to battle, but is killed by Hunding. Brunnhilde takes Sieglinde and Siegmund's broken sword to safety, where they are met by her Valkyries sisters. In the opera "Die Walkure" this is the scene of the famous music for "The Ride of the Valkyries."
