- MARDI GRAS BIOGRAPHY
- MARDI GRAS, "FAT TUESDAY" is a Wild Holiday
Celebrated Around the World with Outrageous Parades, Masks, Beads,
Dancing, Debauchery and Feasts starting on the Christian feasts of the
Epiphany and culminating “Fat Tuesday” (or in French “Mardi Gras”)
before Ash Wednesday which begins the religious observance of “Lent.”
-
- Mardi Gras, also known as "Fat Tuesday" or "Shrove
Tuesday", is celebrated the day before "Ash Wednesday", which
begins the religious observance of "Lent". The words "Mardi
Gras" is French for "Fat Tuesday". Mardi Gras started
thousands of years ago in Rome and Greece. When Christianity was
introduced to Rome, Mardi Gras was celebrated with people
feasting on fatty foods before Lent began, which is a period of
fasting. During Mardi Gras, people ate meat, eggs, cheese and
other foods that were forbidden during Lent. Mardi Gras
began spreading to other European countries, like France,
Germany, England and more.
-
- Mardi Gras began in the United States on March 3,
1699 when French explorers the Le Moyne brothers, d'Iberville
and Bienville, were sent by King Louis XIV to Louisiane
(Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas area) to defend their
territory. The explorers landed in New Orleans and named
the spot Point du Mardi Gras. In 1703, French settlers started
celebrating Mardi Gras every year, which culminated on the day
of "Fat Tuesday". The debauchery on the streets of New Orleans
was a yearly celebration, until the Spanish took over Louisiana
in 1763 and stopped the outrageous festivities. When Louisiana
became a state in 1812, Mardi Gras was able to continue again -
which it did in 1827. In 1837 the first Mardi Gras parade was
celebrated and the traditions of wearing masks, colorful
clothes, throwing beads, dancing, eating King cakes and more
insanity has continued. "Mardi Gras" is celebrated around
the world today.
