GALILEO GALILEI
- GALILEO GALILEI BIOGRAPHY
1564-1642
GALILEO GALILEI was one of the world's greatest scientific pioneers. He was
an inventor, astronomer and a REBEL, who angered the
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH by claiming the Earth is NOT the central point of the universe,
which the Church claimed it was.
-
- Galileo was born on Feb 15, 1564 in Pisa Italy. At the age of 17, Galileo began
experimenting with pendulums and became a Math professor. In 1609, Galileo constructed an
improved model of the telescope and began his atronomical observations. He published "History
and Demonstrations Concerning Sunspots and Their Phenomena." Galileo
proved, as did his predecessor Nicolaus Copernicus, that Earth revolved around the
Sun.
-
- In 1614 a Dominican priest, Thomas Caccini, condemned Galileo for supporting
Copernicus's Theory. The INQUISITION summoned Galileo to Rome. Pope Urban VIII was
furious with Galileo and wanted him punished for going against the
Church's authority and beliefs.
-
- In 1633 Galileo, at the age of 69, stood trial for HERESY and
was found GUILTY and sentenced to LIFE IMPRISONMENT.
Galileo went blind and his books were banned. Galileo fell into a dark depression. On
January 8, 1642, Galileo died in his sleep, STILL under HOUSE ARREST.
-
- ONLY IN 1992 did the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH ADMIT TO BEING
MISTAKEN IN DEALING WITH GALILEO.
Thanks to Galileo, "The Age of Elightenment" spread
throughout the entire civilized world and he opened a whole new approach to science.
