DANTE'S "INFERNO" BY DANTE ALIGHIERI
(1265-1321)
DANTE'S "INFERNO" from Dante's genius "DIVINE COMEDY", which
features 9 LEVELS OF SUFFERING, DEMONIC SLAVES INFLICTING TORTURE ON
SINNERS and SATAN DEVOURING TRAITORS!
"ALL HOPE ABANDON, YE WHO ENTER HERE."
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, Italy on May
21, 1265. He was born
into nobility from Roman founders of Florence.
Dante studied with many
poets and masters of literary art. Dante fell in love with
Beatrice Portinari, who died in 1290 and caused Dante to study
Classical Philosophy. He thought Beatrice was watching over him
after her death and she became the source of his spiritual
inspiration. He became one of the Priors (councilman) of the
Florentine Republic in 1300. In 1301 Dante openly opposed
the Pope's views, which he thought threatened Florentine's
independence. Dante was exiled and banished from Florence in
1302 on punishment of death
if he were to return. He was offered a humiliating pardon, which
he refused and stayed in Tuscany.
Dante's most famous masterpiece was
the epic poem
"DIVINE COMEDY" or "DIVINA COMMEDIA"
(originally called "Commedia"),
composed at the age of 35 and completed before his death.
"Divine Comedy"
was set in the year 1300. In
this masterpiece, Dante himself is led by
Virgil (a Roman poet
who lived 70 B.C. - 19 B.C.) in a journey though
HELL (INFERNO), PURGATORY (PURGATORIO) and PARADISE (PARADISO).
It was a revolutionary masterpiece also because it was written
in Italian, not Latin-the language of cultured and educated
people. This is an allegory of Dante's journey in the
SUPERNATURAL world as it relates to real-life. In the poem,
Dante encounters famous people and events in history, the Bible
and mythology, such as Cleopatra, Brutus, Cassius, Judas, The
Furies, Satan, Homer, etc., cleverly placing them throughout his
journey.
DANTE'S INFERNO
consists of nine levels descending into the earth. These are the
9 circles of suffering (limbo, lust, gluttony,
avarice, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and betrayal).
Dante passes through the gate of hell where you read the famous
phrase, "ALL HOPE ABANDON, YE WHO ENTER HERE."
Dante sees evil
people, thieves, hypocrites, liars, outcasts, heretics, sinners
and damned souls. SATAN is featured at the
CENTER of the EARTH
dispensing hellish torture and punishment for his demonic slaves
to inflict on the sinners. The ninth level is saved for traitors
whose punishment is to get
DEVOURED by SATAN.
Dante Alighieri died of Malaria on September 14, 1321 in Ravenna.
Florence regretted exiling Dante and tried to retrieve his
remains, but Dante's custodians refused. Dante is now considered
ITALY'S MOST FAMOUS POET.
